Mike Cowley - Managing Director
Chartered Surveyor - RICS Registered Valuer
I am the Owner and Managing Director of Ashmore Surveyors and despite approaching my 55th birthday at the time of writing, I have over 36 years of experience in the Surveying Profession, having joined Maynards Chartered Surveyors in Sheffield at the ripe old age of 18.
I was born in Sheffield and I was educated at King Edward VII School, Sheffield and following A-levels and a chance visit to the careers office in Sheffield, I ended up studying for a part-time BSC Degree in Urban Estate Surveying at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham which was a five year degree course and I studied one day a week.
I am married with two grown-up daughters and at the time of writing, two growing up granddaughters and I will need to get on top of my fitness to keep up with the girls as they grow up.
Following a fairly mediocre Rugby playing career from school and through to club level, I decided to return to my first love which is Speedway. At present, my collection includes a 500 cc laydown Jawa, a Lantenhammer-tuned upright GM 500, an Upright Jawa 898, a 200cc Kawasaki ‘blasting’ bike and 1952 Rotrax JAP which is keeping warm in our office as we speak.
I oversee a nicely expanding team of whom I am very proud. My ambition is to get a couple of hours in my shed tinkering, building and hopefully not messing things up.
As a Chartered Surveyor, I have built my reputation on fairness and honesty. That comes out in my dealings with Clients but also in the way that I report on official cases, including those referred to a Court.
It was an old Finance Director who told me to try to answer every question before anyone had the chance to ask it and it would keep them off my back. This was great advice which I have continued to follow ever since. I am particularly proud of the lovely reviews that Clients take the time and trouble to write and certainly the ethos of the Firm is shown quite clearly in those reviews.
Alex Moore - Senior Surveyor
B.Sc. (Hons.) M.Sc. (Surveying)
I’m the Senior Surveyor at Ashmore Surveyors and I grew up in Hinckley, the youngest of 5 siblings and step-siblings and I completed my GCSE's and A-levels at John Cleveland College before moving to Stoke-on-Trent to study Chemistry and Maths for my Undergraduate Degree at Keele University. Since leaving University, I have completed a Masters Degree in Surveying (Real Estate) from Northumbria University and I am now completing my APC on the way to becoming a fully-fledged Chartered Surveyor.
I grew up with property in the blood as it were as my parents have owned an Estate Agency since I was 14 years old, sparking my interest in housing and I’ve recently bought my second house with my wife. We share our house with our cat, Peanut, and Springer Spaniel, Kylo.
When I’m not working or walking my dog, I have an interest in sports, mainly football but I'm also a big fan of American sports, both basketball and NFL. I enjoy watching NFL games in Wembley and have been to watch NBA games when they are hosted in London, along with watching as many Leicester City matches as possible.
I enjoy working at Ashmore Surveyors, it has been great to learn from Mike, both in the office and out on Surveys and the working atmosphere at Ashmore Surveyors is always a lot of fun. We all work hard and are a good team, but we can also have a laugh, which makes the days more enjoyable.

At the time of writing this, I am 52 years old and I am the ‘new recruit’ at Ashmore Surveyors. I have 28 years’ experience in the Surveying World, specialising in the management and valuation of Residential and Commercial Property. My professional surveying career has been somewhat varied and interesting. Although born in Coventry, my formative years was spent growing up in Hinckley and Burbage, Leicestershire. I went to John Cleveland College, Hinckley and gained decent grades at O-Level Grades, but less than decent grades at A-Level. This meant that instead of studying a surveying degree Course at Nottingham Polytechnic, I ended up in Newcastle Upon Tyne Polytechnic, studying Land Management on their HND course. However, the disappointment of not getting to Nottingham didn’t last long, as I soon embraced ‘Geordie’ life to the full.
After gaining my HND in Land Management, my first Professional job was as a Trainee Surveyor for an Estate Agent in Leicester. This didn’t last long and I soon moved to Leicestershire County Council to train as a Surveyor within their Property Department. I completed a part-time B.Sc. Degree in Property Management at Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University). After eight great years at the Council and gaining my professional RICS qualification, the world was my oyster.
I left the council for the exciting world of Telecommunications, where I first started at British Gas working all over the country managing their telecoms sites. This led to Orange PCS in Birmingham, which once again took me around the country acquiring and managing telecoms sites. As the telecoms bubble grew, I decided to leave Corporate life and started out as a Contractor and then a Partnership, purchasing and managing telecoms sites for a number of Operators. When the telecoms bubble finally burst, I left the telecoms profession and started work back in the Corporate world but this time, in the Residential sector, for E.surv Chartered Surveyors. After 14 years with E.surv and a chance meeting with Mike Cowley, his charismatic charm and professional enthusiasm, was all that was needed for me to join Ashmore Surveyors.
When I’m not working, my life revolves around two beautiful and fantastic children and my equally beautiful Partner Jennie. I have an interest in sport, mainly football but I'm also a fan of Rugby and Cricket. My sporting career is limited, due to age and injuries, but I manage to kick a ball around with my son and go swimming on a regular basis. Being a former season ticket holder at Coventry City, I am now waiting for the day when they return to the City, when we can once again follow the team I have supported since I was a kid.
